Modern "smart" TVs carry a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module and run a dedicated operating system — Tizen, webOS, Google TV or VIDAA depending on the brand — that powers streaming apps, voice assistants and screen mirroring. Faults here are software as often as hardware: corrupted app data, a failed firmware update, or storage that has filled up can all produce symptoms that look like a broken TV but are actually a five-minute fix.
We always attempt the free and low-cost recovery paths first — cache clearing, app reinstalls, factory reset with your settings backed up, and firmware re-flashing — before treating a smart-platform fault as hardware.
Brands we fit and service
The wi-fi & smart module market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:
- Samsung Tizen
- LG webOS
- Sony/Hisense/TCL Google TV
- Hisense VIDAA
See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.
When the wi-fi & smart module goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Won't connect to Wi-Fi — The TV can't find or hold a Wi-Fi connection, or connects and drops repeatedly.
- Apps crash or won't open — Streaming apps close unexpectedly, hang on loading, or won't open at all — while the rest of the TV works normally.
- Smart menu is slow or frozen — The home screen and menus are sluggish, unresponsive, or freeze entirely, sometimes requiring a hard power-off.
- Screen mirroring / casting doesn't work — AirPlay, Google Cast or screen mirroring from a phone or laptop fails to connect or drops immediately.
