Mainboard (Logic Board)

The TV's brain — processes the incoming signal, drives the panel and audio, and runs the smart platform.

The mainboard (sometimes called the logic board or main PCB) is where the TV actually "thinks": it decodes the incoming signal from HDMI or the tuner, processes image and sound, drives the panel through the T-Con board, runs the smart TV operating system, and talks to the remote. A mainboard fault can look like almost anything — a frozen logo, no response to any input, or a picture that is present but wrong in some specific way.

Mainboards are also the most component-dense board in the TV, so diagnosis relies on process of elimination: confirming power is healthy, confirming the panel and backlight are healthy, and only then concluding the mainboard itself is at fault. That discipline is what separates an accurate repair from a guessed parts swap.

Firmware corruption — as opposed to hardware failure — is a genuine and much cheaper alternative cause of many "mainboard" symptoms, which is why a proper diagnosis always tries a firmware recovery before condemning the board.

Brands we fit and service

The mainboard (logic board) market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on our installations:

  • Samsung
  • LG
  • Sony
  • Hisense
  • TCL
  • Philips
  • Panasonic

See our brand guides for how these manufacturers compare.

When the mainboard (logic board) goes wrong

These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:

  • TV stuck on logo screen — The manufacturer logo appears on startup and the TV never gets past it, sometimes restarting in a loop.
  • No response to remote or buttons — The TV is powered on (backlight visible, sound plays) but does not respond to the remote or the physical buttons.
  • Distorted or corrupted image — Blocky artefacts, wrong colours, a shifted or scrambled picture across all sources — not just one HDMI input.
  • TV restarts or freezes randomly — The TV works, then freezes or reboots itself with no pattern — sometimes during a specific app, sometimes at random.
  • No image processing on any input — Every HDMI input, the tuner and every app show the same blank/black/error state — the fault follows the TV, not the sour…
