That margin is the real measure of an installation. A dish peaked properly on a meter might sit at a signal quality reading in the high seventies on a clear day; the same dish aligned by eye might read in the low sixties and look identical on screen. When a storm takes fifteen points off both, one keeps showing a picture and the other goes to E48-32. Same dish, same decoder, same weather — different install.
What we can do about it. Peak the dish properly. Check the LNB skew, which is frequently left wrong and quietly costs several points. Replace corroded connectors and any cable that has been sun-baked to the point of loss. Where a property genuinely sits in a difficult spot, a larger dish buys back real margin.
What nobody can do about it. Eliminate it entirely. Anyone promising a system that never drops in a cloudburst is selling something. We would rather be straight about it.
On dish size specifically: stepping up from a 60cm to a 90cm reflector typically buys a few decibels of margin, which in practice is the difference between losing the picture in a heavy shower and riding through it. It is not the answer for every property, but where rain fade is a chronic complaint it is usually the most cost-effective fix available.
What the error codes actually mean
The codes on screen are more useful than they look, and knowing which family yours belongs to tells you whether you need a technician at all.
E48-32 — "no signal being received". The one everyone knows. The decoder is not seeing usable signal from the dish. Causes run from weather, through a shifted dish or dead LNB, to a cable fault. If it clears when the rain stops, your installation is marginal rather than broken. If it does not clear, something in the chain has failed.
E16 and subscription-family codes. The decoder is receiving fine and is not authorised to decrypt. This is an account or smartcard matter, not a dish one. Clearing an error on the self-service portal fixes most of these in minutes, and it costs nothing.
E30-4 and similar. Usually a decoder that has lost part of its channel or authorisation data. Frequently recoverable with a proper reset rather than a replacement.
No code, no picture, no lights. Power supply, and often the simplest fix in the whole list.

Most household policies cover surge and strike damage to electronics, and an insurer generally wants a technician's description of which components failed and why. Dishes, LNBs and the parts that matter
A satellite installation is four components and a cable, and each one has a version that lasts and a version that does not.
The dish. Most homes in Durban are fine on a standard offset dish. Bigger is not automatically better, but where a property sits in a marginal spot — heavy tree cover, a long way from the beam centre, chronic rain-fade complaints — a larger reflector buys real margin and is usually the cheapest way to buy it. On Extra View specifically: linking a second decoder properly needs either a SMART LNB or the right splitter arrangement, plus a cable path to the second room. Done correctly it is invisible; done with the wrong LNB it produces a second room that half works and drops channels at random, which is one of the more common faults we are called out to undo.
Where an existing installation is sound, we will say so and reuse it. Plenty of call-outs end with a new LNB on a perfectly good ten-year-old dish, because the reflector is a piece of shaped metal and there is nothing about it that wears out if the mount is solid.
We will tell you when it is not the dish
A decent share of satellite call-outs are not satellite faults, and saying so costs us the job. We say so anyway, for the same reason any trade that intends to still be here in ten years does.
Subscription and account errors. If the signal reading is healthy and you are still getting an error, no work on the dish will change anything. Most of these clear from the self-service portal in a few minutes at no cost. We will talk you through it rather than book a call-out.
HDMI, TV input and sound problems. A decoder working perfectly into a television set to the wrong input looks exactly like a dead decoder. So does a failed HDMI cable. Both get checked before anyone goes near the roof.
Faults that are actually the television. Occasionally the decoder and signal are fine and the set itself has a problem — which, as it happens, we also fix.
Weather. If it drops in heavy rain and returns afterwards, and the margin measures healthy, that is rain fade rather than a fault. We will tell you what could improve it and what genuinely cannot. The assessment is free either way.
Second opinions are welcome, including on our own findings. Done once, properly
The measure of a satellite installation is not whether it works on the day. Every installation works on the day. The measure is whether it still works, unattended, through three summers of storms and sun.
What that takes. Mounts bolted into structure rather than into mortar or battens. Cable clipped at proper intervals so wind cannot work it loose, with a drip loop before it enters the wall so water runs off rather than in. Compression connectors, made up fresh. Outdoor joints weatherproofed. LNB skew set for Durban rather than left at the factory angle. And the dish peaked on a meter with the readings recorded.
What it costs. An extra half hour, most of the time. That is the entire difference, and it is why we would rather quote honestly for the longer job than win the work and be back in eighteen months.

Outdoor equipment fails. Connectors let water in, LNBs take surges, and mounts occasionally move in wind that nobody expected. Any installer claiming otherwise has not been doing it long. What matters is what happens next.
